TENTATIVE

How tentative we enter.
How haltingly proceed
From moment, chance, and option
To trepidatious deed.

With shaky step and timid trial,
We hesitantly grow.
By cautious test, unsteady guess,
And gait unsure, we go.

Till one quotidian, gray dawn,
We suddenly are old
And rue our apprehensive lives
And wish we had been bold.
