The Next Abstinence

Like Mithridates,
I steal my life
On a tender succession of foreclosures,
Politic poisonings
By a civilized concern for the rights of others
To the body of my desires,
That shall,
I see,
Lend a kind of easiness,
So that I may indeed
Go gentle into that
Last abstinence.

Good night, dear.
Put the dog in the kitchen
Before you come to bed.
