Chirp
(a villanelle)

When overcome by stress and worldly cares,
A faint, forlorn devotion helps me cope,
The lonely, evening cricket at his prayers.

His plaintive monody drifts to my ears
In melancholy, soft spondees. A trope
Of sadness and the stress of worldly cares.

A voiceless mute, with leg and wing, he dares
To scratch at heaven with his feeble chirp,
The lonely, evening cricket at his prayers.

Is there a cricket god above that hears
These lamentations? Gives them scope?
Or harkens to the stress of worldly cares?

Close to my heart this mournful music nears.
It comforts me in kind and bears me up,
The lonely, evening cricket at his prayers.

So redolent of loss and grief and tears,
Yet audible... the ancient chirp of hope,
When overcome by stress and worldly cares,
The lonely, evening cricket at his prayers.
