Good Going, God!

Old Euclid
Labored to explain
Lines parallel
Upon a plane
Will not diverge
And just as surely
Cannot merge.
But now we learn
God’s universe
Does not contain
Any surface
Like a plane.
Old Euclid
Would have been
Unnerved
To learn
His universe
Was curved,
Ensuring
That his lines
Will merge,
Or on the
Inside curve,
Diverge.
So high school
Geometric standards
Work only for
Eighth grade
Flatlanders.
Start over!
Two plus two
Is four.
We must be able
To put store
In basic truths,
Or how are we
To teach
Our youths?
But, alas,
It’s now agreed
A two-foot rod
Meeting its twin
At any speed
Combined in length
Is less than four
Or, if departing,
Somewhat more.
So although
It may be said
Two twos are four
While in your head
And in your math
Prescriptive,
Of God’s world...
Too bad...
They’re simply
Not descriptive.
And Einstein,
Of the math
Persuasion,
Sought an
“Everything”
Equation,
Refusing to
Believe the Gods
Cast lots,
Threw dice,
Or played at odds
With Their creation.
He wanted God
To be precise
(Like him
Of course)
And not throw dice
In an uncertain
Universe.
But Einstein
Did not live
To see
It happen that
“Uncertainty,”
Amongst electrons
Neatly hid,
Was precisely
What God did!
A universe
Slightly askew,
“Uncertainty”
In tandem
With a tiny
Splash of
“Random,”
Not mathematic,
Numerical,
Precise, or static,
But really what
It ought to be,
A universe...
And you and me...
Unpredictable!
Unique!
And free!
So all applaud,
“Good going, God!”
The flaw
In Science,
Truth, and Nature
Lies in faulty
Nomenclature.
From Nature
What Science exacts
Are never “Truths,”
But simply “Facts.”
All theories,
Calculations,
Hypotheses, tests,
Equations,
And proofs
May yield facts,
But never truths.
And even facts
May shift,
But “truths” are not
In Science’ gift.
Nature just is.
It needs no “proof.”
It’s Human Nature
That wants “truth.”
It’s Man that seeks.
Then take a lesson
From the Greeks
Who didn’t
Trust in science
To know it,
But turned to the
Philosopher
And poet,
Those skilled
At winnowing
From facts
The seeds
More natural to
Human needs,
“Truths” from
Nature’s facts
Translated
And then by
Human souls
Debated...
Debated, studied,
Dramatized,
Essayed, rehearsed,
Romanticized,
Told, retold,
Mythologized,
Amended,
Embellished,
Loved and hated,
Vilified, and
Celebrated...
Debate
Through history
Extended,
“Truths” refined,
Ever argued,
Open-ended,
But never proved...
As God
Intended.
