In Faith!

If our parents so refined us that our children never mind us,
If we cross bridges when we come to them and burn them all behind us,

If "the most unkindest cut of all," is worstest grammar by the bestest speaker,
If "Doubt truth to be a liar," is advice to the truth-seeker,

If I may be pillowed upon my fair love's ripening breast, still...still...
If a divinity shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will,

If a rose is a rose, is a rose, is a rose,
If life closed twice before its close,

If the marriage contract be a rhapsody of words,
If poems be wordless as the flight of birds,

If time blows pity to envy, and soul to mind,
If we must be cruel only to be kind,

If pride goeth before a fall,
If conscience does make cowards of us all,

If vows fall unshaken ere they mellow be,
If I cannot be chaste except You ravish me,

If every natural impulse is an enemy of the state,
If they also serve who only stand and wait,

Then, by God, I am not deceived in
Believing what cannot be believed in.
