JACK

When Jack climbed the hill
And tumbled for Jill And finally knew married bliss,
He said, "My Jill is part of me now,
And I'm bigger and better for this."

And they moved to Elm Street
Where the neighbors were nice
Till Jack thought of Elm Street as his,
And he said, "Elm Street is part of me now,
And I'm bigger and better for this."

And Elm Street ran through the town of Duluth
Where Jack worked and prospered for years.
"I'm better," he said, "in Duluth,
For I am the sum of whatever I love
And bigger for it. That's the truth."

Jack studied the law,
Loving justice and right,
And became the best lawyer in town,
And he said, "The law is part of me now.
Knowing something makes it your own."

And for a pastime, Jack was a jogger,
Which made him strong
And helped him endure.
And he said, "Distance running is part of me now,
And I'm bigger and better for sure."

And when he retired, Jack took up painting,
For he thought he should know about art,
And he learned composition and color.
For SELF loves embracing the NOT-SELF,
And we grow by becoming the OTHER.

And when he was old and exhausted,
Jack said, "I've grown as big as I'm able
Making NOT-ME into ME where I could.
Knowing the world, you become it.
It's GOD's definition of GOOD."

"And there's only one NOT-ME
Left for me to become.
It's the ultimate NOT-ME there is,
And we should all joyfully know it."
Then joyfully Jack made it his.

So if EROS and THANATOS scare you...
Though they're ONE...
And your outlook is black,
And this story has failed to uplift you,
Then I'm sorry, but YOU DON'T KNOW JACK!

               EROS: the urge to life
THANATOS: the death instinct
