On a Roll

to roll - to move by successive application of all parts of the surface to the ground.
                                    - definition in Samuel Johnson's dictionary.

As whom the gods would ruin
They first visit with success,
May wisdom speed me only toward
Contentedness with less.

To have enough is rich indeed.
Pity the millionaire
Who needs another million,
For by the need, he's poor.

So grace my growth with failure.
Let error be my guide.
May trouble and adversity
Shield my soul from pride.

For how shall I learn mercy
To every struggling soul
But by my own experience of
Not being "on a roll."
