Pelican Repast

The pelican descending
Isn't
As the eagle
High and distant.
His altitude is lowly.

In shanty fisher towns
They harbor
By long forgotten coasts
Of mighty inland nations
Like the ghosts
Of homeless hated aliens,
Unwanted blood.

By day
A mottled clown
Ungainly
Ugly
Brown
By children fed
Like crippled dwarves
And spurned from offal spattered wharves
The which
Beneath
At night
Their young
In wretched refuse born among
Are nourished by their proper pith.
So goes at least the dim and ancient
Quaint
Unproven
Myth.
