Stripes

Nature's symbiosis
Of butterfly and flower
Needs a comprehensive eye
To so divine...a power

To see in difference Oneness,
An underlying kind
God gave to beasts in body,
But only man in mind.

Consider then the Zebra
Of defense so bizarre,
Stripes in vivid black and white
Whose strange origins are

In the stalking Lion's eye,
There thought to cause a vertigo
When raging death descends on
Fleeing lines so vertical.

So is death, the king of beasts,
Who stalks us every one,
By eye divine confounded,
The Father and the Son.

Our nature, red in tooth and claw,
Is Jesus' body scourged,
By pride so torn and tortured,
And by His stripes so purged.
