Then and Only Then

When lions get in bed with lambs,
And kosher delis feature hams,

When poets write again in stanzas,
And evolution’s taught in Kansas,

When a rich man has “enough”
To buy a homeless man a roof.

When a bishop goes on trial
For harboring a pedophile,

When God’s holy inner Light
Illuminates the Christian right,

When Bush learns to separate
The interests of church and state,

And the clear and present dangers
Of sleeping with the money-changers,

When George outwits the Taliban,
And Rumsfeld has an exit plan,

And Cheney’s hailed for honesty,
And torture’s a wise policy,

Then I’ll believe, and only then,
That Christ is a Republican.
