The Open Sea

Rejoice, my soul, my body's ruin,
As caged bird marks her prison fail,
As barks a-building by the harbor
Await the sea, the swelling sail.

Hurt and heartache bow and sadden.
O'ercoming strengthens by design,
And we are tempered in fires creative
On the adamantine forge divine.

For larger life, must not the mother
Weaken, suffer, sacrifice, repine,
And the more-than-man within us
Burst the cerements of time?

Love, when I fail, be not disheartened.
Heavy breakers break not me.
My masts are rigged, the voyage eternal.
My course is set, the open sea.
